Canon Calls Dibs on Bonkers Zoom Lenses

Aug 18, 2020 | Canon, Lenses, News, Patents, Tamron

Last week, Canon filed a patent for a 200-800 f/6 – f/8.5, although this may be a just-in-case “embodiment” of the optical design patent for the imminent RF 100-500 f/4.5 – f/7.1.

There was some confusion as Sony Alpha Rumors mistakenly attributed the patent to Tamron. Canon produces a small minority of its optical design patented lenses, and in only the very rarest of cases produces more than one embodiment of one. That means the internet is likely safe from the otherwise endless tut-tutting that would come from Canon making an L lens with a maximum aperture of f/8.5.
