Nikon Revs Software for Z5; Adobe Revs LRC for Z5, Canon R5, Sony A7s III

Aug 17, 2020 | Bodies, News, Nikon

The good news: Nikon updated its ViewNX-i software so that buyers of the new Z5 (due out later in the month) will be able to read RAW photos. The bad news: those buyers will have to use the Nikon ViewNX-i software to do it.

As with most camera brand software, ViewNX-i is only as easy to use as Nikon’s version is to pronounce (rhymes with pewnzeye?). Nikon is in good company, with software from Sony, Canon, Sigma, Tamron, Panasonic and others all hewing to a common standard of 1980s broken interfaces.

Which is why Nikon Z5 users will be even more pleased that the new 9.4 version of Adobe Lightroom, as updated today, will allow them to forever avoid cracking open the package of floppy disks or tape cassettes or whatever it is Nikon uses to tuck ViewNX-i into camera boxes.

Canon users will also be pleased to hear that Adobe upgraded Lightroom Classic to ingest to read their R5 and R6 RAWs as well. The Sony A7s III got the treatment too.
