Even set against the backdrop of some legitimately bonkers lenses in the RF series, CanonWatch’s latest rumor would suggest the bonkiest are yet to come.
The site received vague hints that in 2021 we might see an RF 500mm F/2.8L, which would be the first time a manufacturer has attempted a supertelephoto prime that bright and long. Physics would dictate an objective lens rivaling the diameter of a small dinner plate, regardless of diffractive optics and other new tech introduced in the last few years by Canon. It brings to mind the old Sigma 200-500 f/2.8 “Sigzilla.”
Also hinted at were an RF 250mm F/2L and a 70-135mm F/2L. For some perspective, the 250mm F/2 would require an objective lens – barring magic – almost exactly the same size as the one currently housed in the Canon 500mm F/4 IIL.
