While Canon will make several dozen lens patents for every one it actually manufactures, a patent for a new 80mm macro in RF mount (thanks, CanonRumors.com) gives Canon mirrorless users some hope, as they have gone for a few years without a flagship macro lens such as the much-loved 100mm f/2.8 L IS USM Macro.
The decade-old 100mm took the world by storm with the first “hybrid” lens IS system that has yet to be improved upon by third party manufacturers in a macro offering. Unfortunately, the complexity of that unique IS system has made the lens a bit more balky on the new mirrorless offerings. A new macro lens has been atop may R5 users’ wishlists.
