Sony Adds 5th Sensor Fab

Sony’s most recent sensor fabrication plant just went online in Nagasaki. New fabs, each of which costs billions, often are the places where generationally advanced equipment is first put in production. If Sony were to start pushing a very new sensor technology, it very likely would be waiting for this plant to come online.

The construction announcement back in 2019 indicated that the plant would focus on CMOS sensors. The new plant is the first new capacity upgrade for Sony – the world’s largest producer – in more than a dozen years.
