Canon announced a surprise firmware update for the popular R5 camera, adding support for a couple compact video lenses when adapted to the camera. The Compact-Servo 18-80 and 70-200 cine T4.4 zooms can now be used on the R5, provided the lenses too have upgraded firmware.

A BT.709 Standard/BT.709 option was added under Gamma/Gamut for the EOS C70, EOS C300 Mark III, EOS C500 Mark II.

The EOS C300 Mark III and EOS C500 Mark II now support Canon’s XC Protocol for streaming and camera control.

The manufacturer also added the ability to use both the Mon. Out & HDMI output simultaneously for those same cameras.

The EOS C70 also added a “Whole area” option to the AF Frame size, increasing the AF area to 80% of the frame, among other improvements.

The inclusion of the R5 in the slate of cine-specific firmware updates is interesting, perhaps reflecting its increased capacity and longevity in recording 4K HQ when using external recorders.

The firmware update is expected to be released on July 30.
