Canon R5 To Get Firmware Rev

CanonWatch reports that it’s gotten word of a new Canon R5 firmware update. They also report that they do not expect any notable new features with the update. This is sort of like getting word that the moon have a full cycle next month, and that we won’t see aliens on it. In the US, we call that a “dog bites man” story.

But… Canon will sometimes release a firmware update for cameras that can use new features designed for and included in a brand new camera release. The timing of the release is interesting in that we expect a Canon R3 release quite soon. There may be R5 firmware goodness that Canon has developed that it’s been saving for post-R3-release.

Generally, hardware limitations will determine what bits of firmware an older body gets. We cannot expect pupil-detected focus point selection in the R5, but we could certainly use a better intervalometer.
