Canon is seeking to further exploit its deep learning-derived object identification capability to adapt additional camera functions around the nature of the objects identified. The example given in the patent application (via CanonWatch) is the recognition of a skittish species of animal, where the camera would set its volume to a lower level so as not to spook the subject.

This will strike wildlife photographers as a little odd, as few of them would be caught out using the artificial shutter sound out in the field, but the principle of connecting recognized subjects with changes in camera settings is intriguing.

The patent application attributed the invention to Hiroyuki Suzuki.
