No one who owns the RF 70-200 f/2.8 zoom would say Canon needs an update – unless they don’t like the trombone-style form factor. But Canon just applied for a patent (via CanonWatch.com) on a new lens design for exactly that – complete with extending barrel. 
What is interesting about the lens design is the fact that some element groups rack at different rates and even in different directions as the lens is zoomed. The cam system holding and moving those groups would be pretty interesting to see. We counted seven different groups moving at different rates or directions between 70mm and 200mm.
