Nikon: Z400mm f/2.8 So Powerful, It Could Kill You

Seriously, Nikon’s manual for the new Z400mm lens that comes equipped with a 1.4x teleconverter switch contains magnets so strong, that it “could cause medical devices to malfunction.” Nikon warns: “Do not use this product if you have a pacemaker or other medical device.” The warning was first reported on Nikon Rumors.

The same warning was buried in the Z 100-400 materials, but we remain unaware of the death toll from that popular zoom, so perhaps the warnings could be attributed to over-zealous Nikon lawyers working in excessively tortious jurisdictions.

The newer high-end Nikon lenses are using what the manufacturer calls a “Silky Swift Voice Coil Motor” autofocus mechanism that uses powerful magnets, which may be the culprit for creating a larger magnetic field. This brings new meaning to Nikon Deathwatch.
