An interview with an OM Digital executive (via 43Rumors.com) showed that their new OM-1 flagship’s old-school resolution was a deliberate design choice, as they wished to eliminate as much sensor noise as possible, exploiting the larger photo sites linked with a lower-resolution sensor.
That said, he indicated that they would consider 32 MP resolution sensors and 8K video.
The need to worry about the higher resolution versus the noise would almost suggest that the Micro Four Thirds sensor size was a bit small for the purposes of modern photographers.
