Nikon is rumored to be pricing its soon-to-be-released 400mm f/4.5 lens in Z mount at about $2,000. It’s an interestingly volatile pricing prediction because it could be considered akin to the Canon 400mm f/4 DO, which retails for $6,900, or it could be considered more like the older Canon 400mm f/5.6 L lens that was sold until recently for $1,250.
There is a lot of pricing wiggle room between those most-like lenses. The lens itself is sized between the two, and early, pre-production reviews are proving very favorable. The rumor likely comes from such a video, one from Manny Ortiz, who indicated it would cost roughly $12,000 less than the Nikon Z mount f/2.8 400mm lens that costs $14,000. The ortiz reference appears to be the first indication of the rumor on the web.
