Sigma’s CEO Kazuto Yamaki indicated that they’re running full-tilt and still can’t quite catch up with demand. As yet, the chip shortage hasn’t been a severely-limiting factor, but he anticipates it might with certain products in the coming year.

Kazuto YamakiThere are several implications. As heard from many other sources, the chip shortage appears to be getting worse, not better. Business-to-business tech news sites are settling on mid-2023 for the trend to reverse.

It also implies that there is little to be gained by Sigma to start in on Canon RF or Nikon Z lines of lenses. 51 weeks ago, Yamaki indicated they were seriously considering jumping into that market, but that was a time – even a year after the beginning of the pandemic – of some naivete, the world mostly believing the virus would be quelled in months and the chip shortage soon thereafter.
